Introduction

People who eat fruits and vegetables as part of their daily diet have a reduced risk of many chronic diseases. Vegetables are important part of healthy eating and provide a source of many nutrients, including potassium, fiber, folate (folic acid) and vitamins A, E and C. Almost all vegetables crops are propagated by seeds, except a few like sweet potatoes, asparagus, garlic, potatoes, which are propagated vegetatively. Among the vegetable crops which are propagated by seeds, most of them like cucurbits, beans, peas, radish, turnip, carrots and leafy vegetables are sown directly in the fields. Other vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, onion, chili etc. are first sown in nursery beds where seedlings are raised and then transplanted. A nursery could be considered as a location where plants are cared for during the early stages of growth, providing optimum conditions for germination and subsequent growth, until they are strong enough to be planted out in their permanent place. Some vegetables require special cares during their early growth period. There are some vegetables with very small sized seeds. These are first sown in the nursery for better care and to combat with the time for field preparation and after about one month of seed sowing, transplanted in the main field. The technology of raising healthy seedling by using peat moss substrate and compost in multipot trays is getting popularity. With this approach, early and late vegetable crops can be obtained by raising early and late seedlings and is considered very beneficial. However, it needs scaling up to reach maximum beneficiaries of the community. Nursery of vegetable crops can be raised in multipot trays under very simple and low cost protected structures like walk-in tunnels. This technology is very effective for producing early crops vegetables. It will provide ready to transplant nursery or ready to grow plants of different vegetables to promote kitchen gardening.
